As the province of Negros Occidental celebrated its public holiday known as Cinco de Noviembre, on Thursday, November 5, 2020 to commemorate the Negrenses' revolt against the Spanish colonizers on that same date in 1898 when the uprising led to the surrender of the Spanish troops, a new revolution took place in a different realm.
The new revolution was a revolution of culture and art wherein the cultural riches of the island of Negros would be showcased through an online and on-ground platform known as the Negros Season of Culture.
What exactly is the Negros Season of Culture?
Male Zone Magazine lists down 5 things you should know about it.
1) It is an extended program to promote
the cultural assets of Negrense heritage and traditions, the unique identity
of the province of Negros Occidental and the talent of its people.
The Negros Season of Culture is an initiative by the Angelica Berrie Foundation aimed to bring these gifts of creativity, artistry, and culture to the
consciousness of the local community and share it with the world. It's a
celebration that defines the Negrenses' global reach with the tagline, "Rooted. Taking on
the World."
2) It is more than just a website which was launched on November 5, 2020. The Negros Season of Culture is a whole program and slew of events, both online and on-ground which will highlight the many aspects of Negrense culture. All activities and stories found on the website or on the ground will weave stories of creativity that
dramatizes a regional narrative which local, national and global audiences
can discover.
3) The Negros Season of Culture focuses on six main "Stories" of creativity. These are Negrense Food, Cultural Experience, Art, Handicrafts, Heritage, and People.

4) The first year of the Negros Season of Culture celebrates the life of Negrense cultural hero, the late Peque Gallaga, a Negros native who is
considered one of the country's greatest directors recognized
internationally. Gallaga inspired many Negrenses be
something bigger than themselves, teaching them to express our creativity
in big, bold ways that contribute to the story of this place called by Negrenses as
home. A tribute video on the revered director was premiered on the
website earlier this evening.

5) The launch was held on November 5, 2020, Thursday at 8PM Philippine Standard Time and 7AM New York Time (11AM GMT for those in the UK). The program was hosted by multi-awarded Negrense actor Joel Torre, and streamed
through Facebook Live.
Actor Joel Torre's emotions welled up as he fondly talked about the late Peque Gallaga as his teacher, mentor, guru, friend, and sometimes, his father. Torre admitted that he would not be where he was in the entertainment industry if not for Peque.
